Banana - my sick ferret
(prince george BC)
I have a year old ferret named Banana. He is my prince! A couple months ago Banana fell very ill. He wouldn't eat, he refused to drink, and his back end became very weak. I brought him to my vet and he was diagnosed with a stomach ulcer. Banana was put on two different types of medication and pepto bismol. We had to force feed him wet food, water and his medication through a syringe. He began losing a tremendous amount of weight! We could feel every single rib in his body and every single vertebrae in his spin. We noticed that his stool was very dark, very small, and very tarry. After about a week without the medication working, we took him back to the vet. We mentioned doing blood work but the vet kept saying it would be inconclusive and a waste of time. He prescriptived Banana a stronger medication to replace the pepto bismol. He said it should work within a couple of days and if it didn't to bring him back. Guess what? It didn't work. Banana was growing weaker. he was immobile and wasn't walking anymore due to sever rear end weakness. He wouldn't even let us force water in him anymore. His breathing was irregular and he kept losing weight. So we brought him back to the vet and requested blood work again. The vet still said that the blood work would be a waste of time! He gave us a drip IV to take home, which we had to put into Banana's back to get water into him. After a week we went back for the fourth time and the vet told us that he was getting weaker and we should put him down. I took him to a different vet who did blood work and an ultra sound. The blood work showed a high white blood cell count which showed infection. We have been giving Banana antibiotics for two weeks now and he is doing amazing!!! He is running around, he is eating hard foods on his own, and drinking on his own!!!! He plays with my other ferret again and his stool is normal! He wont stop eating and has gained so much weight!! I am so happy to have my Banana back. Seeing him sick like that and so close to death was horrible! I am sharing my story with you today because if you have a ferret who has fallen ill please go with your heart! The vet told me to put him down, but I knew it wasn't the right thing. The vet didn't even do blood tests!!! I knew I couldn't give up on him. I love him to much.
