Desexing the mother ferret

by Lesley
(Newcastle)

Hi,
Need help/info please, I have two female ferrets that have just had babys, I want to get the mums desexed, 1 lot of babys are 8 weeks old and are now in a seperate cage feeding and drinking fine by themselves......Can you tell me how long it takes for the mums milk to dry up so I can get them desexed?
Or when is the BEST TIME to get her desexed after having a litter, I have kept all female and male Ferrets seperated until they are desexed.
Thanks so much for your time and any info would be gratefully appreciated,
Thanks again Lesley

ANSWER:

Hi Lesley,

Thanks for your question. Sorry it took me so long to get back to you, I actually wanted to talk to the ferret specialist before I answered this question.

According to Dr. Vella, he said that he recommends desexing the mothers anytime now as the milk dries up very quickly after the young stop suckling.

So your all good to go!

If you are unsure of where to get a good ferret vet then I would recommend speaking to your nearest ferret welfare society and asking them who they use. That way you know they will know what they are doing.

Thanks and I hope that helps :)
Stef
